Privacy / Local-first by design

Your screen stays yours.

ScreenCaptureOne captures only when you ask. Screenshots and recordings stay on your device unless you share them, and remote processing receives only the input required for the feature you choose.

Scope and explicit capture

ScreenCaptureOne is a local-first screenshot and screen-recording utility for Android. It captures the visible screen only after you use the floating control, Quick Settings action, or configured shortcut.

  • Screenshots and recordings. Captured PNG and MP4 files are written to the output location on your device.
  • No automatic sharing. Capture files stay local unless you explicitly choose a share action.
  • Recording consent. Android presents its built-in screen-recording consent flow each time a new recording starts.
02

Local files, editing, and OCR

Saved screenshots, recordings, annotations, file names, and locally reopened results remain on the device.

  • Editing. Screenshot annotations are processed locally. An annotated PNG is written only when you choose Export; Copy Annotated creates a temporary local cache file for Android clipboard access.
  • On-device OCR. Opening OCR actions for a saved screenshot extracts text locally. ScreenCaptureOne does not upload that detected text unless you separately request a remote feature such as Translator.
  • Local copy. Copying a saved screenshot places the image on the Android clipboard without uploading it.
03

Permissions and Android controls

ScreenCaptureOne requests Android permissions only for app functions that need them and shows separate disclosures before sensitive setup paths.

  • Accessibility. Used for Android screenshot capture, scroll-area inspection for scrolling screenshots, and optional Volume Down handling. The app shows its Accessibility disclosure before opening Android settings.
  • Display over other apps. Used for the floating control in Screenshot, Translator, Video recording, and Audio transcript modes.
  • Notifications. Used on newer Android versions to keep active foreground services running.
  • Microphone. Optional for Screenshot and Translator. It is required for the default free recording profile, Audio transcript mode, and Plus recording when microphone or internal audio is enabled.
  • Internet and network state. Used for Google Play billing, permitted free-tier ads, provider setup checks, translation, and user-requested transcription.

Translator data flow

Translator performs OCR on the device first. It sends only the detected text to the AI provider and endpoint you selected; the screenshot image is never part of that request.

  • First-use disclosure. Before the first Translator upload, the reader explains the transfer and waits for your acceptance.
  • Reply translation. When you translate a drafted reply back to the original language, the request contains the drafted reply and the original OCR text context needed for that translation, not the screenshot.
  • Local result. Successful translations and replies are copied to the Android clipboard and may be retained in app-private local storage for reopening.
05

Audio transcript data flow

When you request a transcript, ScreenCaptureOne extracts only the recording audio into temporary app cache and sends that audio to your configured OpenAI, Grok, or Gemini endpoint. The screen video is not uploaded for transcription.

  • First-use disclosure. The transcript reader explains the transfer and waits for acceptance before the first upload.
  • Optional translation. If Translate transcript is enabled, recognized transcript text is sent in a second request to the configured chat model and endpoint.
  • Cancelable processing. Extraction, upload, response download, and optional translation run as a user-visible foreground task that can be canceled.
  • Temporary audio. The extracted file is deleted after success, failure, or cancellation. Gemini file uploads are also deleted through the Gemini Files API after processing finishes.
06

AI providers and connection safeguards

You choose and configure the remote AI provider used by Translator and Audio transcript. Translation supports OpenAI, Ollama Cloud, Grok, and Gemini; transcription supports OpenAI, Grok, and Gemini.

  • Provider terms. Processing, retention, regional availability, and provider billing are governed by the selected provider and your account with that provider.
  • Local credentials. API keys, endpoints, and model choices stay in local app settings. API keys are kept in encrypted app storage, and Android cloud backup is disabled for app data.
  • Safer endpoints. Provider endpoints must use HTTPS and cannot include credential query parameters. The app does not automatically follow redirects, limits response sizes, and redacts credential-shaped values from provider errors.

07

Clipboard, sharing, and notifications

Copy and sharing actions remain under your control and use Android system services.

  • Sensitive clipboard. OCR, translation, transcript, reply, and screenshot clipboard entries are marked sensitive so supported Android versions can hide previews. You can still paste them into another app.
  • Sharing. Recent hands selected local files only to the Android app you choose. Shortcut availability checks are limited to WhatsApp, Viber, email, SMS, and standard Android share handlers and happen locally.
  • Private notifications. Recording, transcription, and floating-control notifications are marked private so Android can redact details on the lock screen according to your notification settings.
08

Storage, retention, and deletion

Capture files remain in your selected device folder. Completed translations and original transcripts can be stored in app-private local storage so they reopen without another provider request.

  • Associated results. Deleting a recording through ScreenCaptureOne also deletes its locally stored transcript result.
  • Interrupted cleanup. If Android stops the app before temporary recording or extracted-audio cleanup finishes, abandoned internal media cache files are removed the next time the app starts.
  • Active shares protected. Temporary files currently used for diagnostics export or editor clipboard sharing are excluded from startup cleanup so an active user-directed share is not broken.
09

Google Play, Plus, and advertising

Google Play handles subscription purchase and management. ScreenCaptureOne refreshes Plus entitlement through Google Play and caches a successful verification locally for up to seven days for offline access; pending purchases do not unlock Plus.

  • Free edition. Free Play users may see banner, app-open, and native advertising.
  • Plus edition. Plus subscribers do not see ads.
  • Consent-led ad loading. Live ads are requested only when Google consent permits them. If consent later stops permitting requests, cached app-open and inline ads are removed. A newly loaded app-open ad waits for a later foreground rather than interrupting the screen already in use.
10

Diagnostics and support exports

Diagnostics are optional. When enabled, event logs stay in memory until cleared and become a shareable cache file only when you explicitly export a report.

  • Sanitized output. Credential-shaped values, capture-file URIs, and line breaks are sanitized before log output and report capture.
  • Useful context. Reports can include local runtime-health checkpoints and the latest handled or fatal error summary so support can understand overlay and recording-service state around a failure.
  • Device-bound data. Android backup is disabled, keeping cached entitlement state and local diagnostics tied to the installed device.

Your action / Your control

Nothing moves until you choose the feature.

Capture, sharing, translation, transcription, diagnostics export, and purchase actions each begin with a user request or an Android consent step.
